Charleston Continues de #GullahGeechee Nation Appreciation Week Celebration

Queen Quet emphasizes that the week is not about preservation. "Preserving in our culture is just put it in the jar, lock it up, put it on a shelf, and look at it until you're ready to open that and do away with the contents," she says. "We don't want to preserve. We want it continued, so it's vital that people continue to understand the dynamics of our self-determination, our human rights protection."

The Gullah Geechee culture sprang up on the sea islands of the American Southeast as Africans came to the country in chains and developed new foodways and a distinctive creole language. "Cum fa jayn we" (Come join us)

The Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™ for 2012 will be the "Gullah/Geechee Jubilee." The event will return to Charleston County, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation. This will be the culmination of "Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week" in Charleston, SC.

The week begins at the July 29, 2012 RiverDogs Baseball game and continues with supporting numerous Gullah/Geechee events throughout the week including...

Saturday AUG 5th: Charleston Maritime Center in downtown Charleston, SC. Admission is $7 per person and $20 for family of 4.

Noon-1 pm Opening Drum Circle and Libation Ceremony featuring WOSEOFCHARLESTON African Drummers and Dancers
(Bring your drums and tamborines.)

The Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™ was co-founded by Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and Kwame Sha of All Mobile Productions™ (AMP™). The festival moves to different parts of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and the Gullah/Geechee Diaspora highlighting the history, heritage and culture of the living legacy of Gullah/Geechees worldwide. Natives of the culture provide presentations, tours, workshops, crafts, and merchandise at the event every year.

The City  of Charleston, SC is where "Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week" all began so it was extremely appropriate that this was the city that culminated the celebration.  Mayor Tecklenberg and his wife Sandy were there for the libation ceremony and they participated in the "Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™."  De ancestas bin da shout fa disya week fa be a blessin!  Tenki Tenki Chucktown fa de love and Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation!
